Travel Thursday – Awe-Inspiring Travel Moments

Clearwater Florida

Traveling has the capabilities to not only give you a glimpse into other cultures and settings, but also provides opportunities to truly take your breath away. Unlike my previous Travel Thursday blogs, this one focuses on those awe-inspiring travel moments I’ve experienced instead of showcasing one destination.

I’m not going to lie I’ve been blessed with some amazing trips and each one I view as its own adventure. Therefore, this list was hard for me to narrow down as I have so many I could choose from. But that means you might see a Part 2 of this blog one day!

If you are looking for a unique time, awesome adventure, or something to take your breath away, then I highly recommend these travel experiences.

My Top Awe-Inspiring Travel Moments

Without further ado and in no particular order, here are my top 21 awe-inspiring travel moments. Plus, why I loved each moment so much.

1. Climbing the Mayan ruins in Belize

There is something humbling about visiting sites that were built by ancient cultures. I had the opportunity to visit Xunantunich in Belize. When you reach the top of ruins you can actually see into Guatemala as well.

2. Watching the Eiffel Tower twinkle at night in Paris

Nothing is more magical than when the lights on the Eiffel Tower in Paris sparkle at night. Luckily, they go off on the hour every hour and last for 5 minutes, so there is ample opportunity to see it every night when you visit Paris.

3. Hiking through the rain forest in St. Kitts & Puerto Rico

If you are looking for something adventurous yet calming, then hiking through a rain forest is for you. It’s almost like being in another world no matter which rain forest you visit. I’ve had the privilege of visiting two rain forests… Central Reserve Rain Forest in St. Kitts and El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico.

4. Climbing a glacier in Iceland

Did you know that glaciers and ice caps cover 11% of land in Iceland? There are 13 large glaciers in Iceland and several smaller ones. That means plenty of options to go climb on a glacier in Iceland! For those who love nature and a good adventure, this activity is a perfect choice!

5. Seeing the fireworks at sea on a Disney Cruise in the Caribbean

This was absolutely one of my favorite experiences! Disney Cruise Lines is the only cruise line in the world that sets fireworks off at sea. They typically shoot them off on the Pirates in the Caribbean nights which is already fun but adds even more magic to the night. I loved how they get it all quiet and dark, then shoot off the first firework! Sorry I didn’t capture too many great photos on either of the two Disney Cruise’s I experienced this as I was too busy enjoying the shows!

6. Enjoying a luau in Oahu, Hawaii

If you are looking for a fun cultural experience, a Hawaiian luau is a great choice! You get to see some fun dances and eat some delicious food.

7. Watching the lightning strike the ocean in Puerto Rico

Nothing is more awe-inspiring than mother nature. There are a handful of nature moments that simply take your breath away. Watching the lightning strike on the ocean is one of them. I got to see this in Puerto Rico when a storm was in full force that evening.

8. Touring the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam

Visiting the Anne Frank Museum is a must. It’s unbelievable to see the space first-hand and learn more about what it was really like for Anne.

9. Seeing the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial Statue

Luckily, these two important structures are within walking range of one of another at the National Mall. Both the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument are stunning historic places to see.

10. Visiting the fairytale town of Bruges

If you want to learn about Bruges, then be sure to visit this past Travel Thursday blog on it. But there is nowhere like it. It is truly like stepping into a fairytale. If you are looking for a romantic or magical destination, then this is it!

11. Gazing at the sunset on the beach in Clearwater, Florida

Don’t get me wrong, sunsets are gorgeous on any beach! I love seeing that sun set on the ocean horizon! But there is something simply gorgeous about the sunsets in Clearwater. Each one is so different yet beautiful.

12. Climbing the stairs in the Cologne Cathedral in Germany

The climb up the south tower of the Cologne Cathedral will literally make your legs shake as it is 100 meters, or in the U.S. that’s just over 328 feet! You must climb 533 steps, many of which are in a tight spiral staircase. However, the view at the very top is so worth it!

13. Being in the middle of the ocean on a cruise

Being in the middle of the ocean, particularly my beloved Caribbean Sea, with nothing else around as far as the eye can see is a remarkable experience.

14. Riding around in a limo in New York City

The sites in NYC are all simply spectacular. Riding around the city in a limo made it so much more exciting! It was so fun shopping and seeing the sites in the ‘Big Apple’ in automotive style.

15. Watching the cliff divers in Acapulco

Seeing the divers jump off the cliffs in Acapulco was nothing short of miraculous. It takes a lot of courage and skill to make that jump!

16. Seeing USS Arizona sunken underneath the ocean in Oahu, Hawaii

Like visiting the Anne Frank Museum, visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial is nothing short of humbling. Seeing the USS Arizona sunken and partially out of the water first-hand really allows you to begin to understand what happened on December 7, 1941.

17. Swimming with the dolphins in Miami and Cozumel, Mexico

I’ve been blessed to experience swimming with playful dolphins twice. The first was at the Miami Seaquarium. It was so fun playing ball and interacting with the dolphins! The second was at Chankanaab in Cozumel. This one was fun as well. But you stand on the platform on the side the whole time and don’t actually ‘swim’ with them.

18. Holding Sea Turtles in Grand Cayman

I’ve had the pleasure of holding the giant sea turtles in Grand Cayman Island twice at their sea turtle farm. I love these gentle giants almost as much as the dolphins!

19. Seeing Hurricane Charley on the horizon in the Caribbean

One of the cruises I traveled on happened to coincide with Hurricane Charley. This disastrous category 4 hurricane remains one of the strongest hurricanes to strike the U.S. We could see this hurricane in the distance when on the cruise. In fact, we were supposed to visit Jamaica as one of our ports of call, but as it was in the hurricane’s path, we had to reroute to another island instead. Charley was just about to make landfall in Florida when we returned at the end of our cruise, and the bands were hitting Florida during our drive back. However, seeing it sea on the horizon was remarkable.

20. Touring the Biltmore Estate at Christmastime

The Biltmore Estate is stunning at every time of the year, but there is something special about seeing it at Christmastime. It is decked out in festive decorations throughout the entire grounds. It’s simply enchanting!

21. Gazing on the amazing waterfalls in Iceland

Last, but certainly not least, are viewing some of the most amazing waterfalls in Iceland. You can learn more about these amazing blogs in this past Travel Thursday blog I wrote.

Don’t miss the next Travel Thursday blog where we will visit Belize. You will learn more about those Mayan ruins I mentioned above!
