Featuring Winston – Camino Bakery

Camino Bakery

I’m very excited to share another amazing local business in my Featuring Winston blog series. I’ve frequented this establishment many times over the years, and I know others here love them as much as I do! This month’s Featuring Winston showcases Camino Bakery! I got to sit down with one of the owners, Amber Chase, this week and hear about all things Camino!

Meet the Owners

You know that expression two heads are better than one? For Camino Bakery, they fully embrace that proverb as they have not just two owners, but four! Amber shares that they each bring their own unique talents to the table.

Pictured above – right from left – the owners are Jordan Poe Crawford, Cary Clifford, Amber Chase, Lisa Warner. Cary is the founding owner and over the years realized she needed help in varying fields. She currently heads up food related operations. Jordan handles coffee & wine, Lisa handles finances, and Amber handles marketing. While each has those area of expertise they oversee, they always collaborate as a team to ensure the best for Camino’s future!

Beyond Coffee is Stories

After all the times I’ve been to Camino and all these years, I still had no clue what the name meant or where it came from. Luckily, Amber set me straight and gave me all the details!

Founding owner Cary, brought a little bit of an amazing journey she experienced in Spain to our lovely town of Winston-Salem. She previously hiked the Camino de Santiago. This pilgrimage is traveled by many travelers for a variety of reasons. It is known to not only be a physical journey but a mental and spiritual one as well. There are different starting points, but they all end at in Galicia (a town in northwestern Spain) at the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great at Santiago de Compostela cathedral.

While hiking this impressive journey Cary greatly enjoyed not only connecting with nature but various locals that lived along the trail. Many invited her into their homes to share meals and drinks as well as amazing stories of their own and other hikers along the trail. She loved this part of the experience so much she wanted to not only name her business after it, but the Camino logo is inspired by it as well. The trail markers on the Camino de Santiago all have a shell marking, which you can see in the Camino logo!

Next time you are at Camino remember this location is so much more than coffee but a place for people to gather and share their stories!

Holiday Teasers

The holidays are just around the corner and Amber shared a couple festive treats they have in store this season.

For Thanksgiving, they are bringing back their popular harvest wreath baguettes. These are ideal for family gatherings. They make for a wonderful appetizer or side and even look beautiful on the table!

Meanwhile for Christmastime, they are making a special red velvet Madeleine. Of course, the red color is perfect for the season and who doesn’t love red velvet?! Pictured below is their brown butter one currently available as the red velvet one is not quite out yet!

Why Winston?

Amber shares she is a Winston-Salem native, as is the founding owner Cary. They both loves this city and are happy to be a part of a place here that brings people joy here.

“I love that Winston-Salem is a local-driven not tourist-driven destination. There is such a collaborative nature in our city, especially among other small business owners. Winston-Salem is full of growth and momentum,” Amber shares.

When not at Camino enjoying her favorites of black coffee and a plain croissant or fresh fruit Danish, she loves visiting several other Winston-Salem businesses and destinations. A few of her favorites are:

  • Mission Pizza
  • Mizu
  • Salem Lake
  • Old Salem
  • Bailey Park
  • Hoots Beer
